I'm not going to talk about Zuma, corruption, or how long the road that lays ahead is.
I'm going to talk and celebrate the strides that have been made in my lifetime, in the 20 years of our democracy, and the sacrifice that has me where I stand, this day. Im going to recall a time when the only restaurant we could eat at as a black family was Mikes Kitchen, when I could not go to school at times because Inkatha was burning tyres, blocking the roads, and when my borders were limited to a designated area. I'm going to recall these memories as a reminder of how far WE have come. My freedom has meant that I have gone to some of the best schools, I am able to walk into any institution with pride and confidence, I am able to walk the inner city thanks to renewal projects across the country, with no form of identification needed. I can choose to leave my car at home and take the My City Bus, Reavaya, or Gautrain? I can live wherever the hell I please. I can study where and what I want. I can marry whom I choose, regardless of race or gender, and I can leave for nations abroad as I choose. I am no longer required to justify my existence under the rule of law. I AM FREE!!
We have come a long, long way and lets not forget. The trend for media to glorify the failures of this country have meant that our wins are often diminished, unseen. I am so, so proud to call myself a South African. In awe of some of the projects and innovations that serve so many. Thankful for the hundreds of years that were endured for ME. I also acknowledge those unsung heroes that contribute to the make-up of this country, everyday. We have come far.
Happy Freedom Day! X
